Chapter Twenty

SAREE GRIMACED, FASTENING the final latches on her armored clock maintenance suit. She wasn’t looking forward to tuning the Cygnus Secundus clock. With the Travelers all folding into the same orbits at the same time, it must have disturbed ^timespace^ terribly. How did they manage to fold all those ships safely in proximity? Did they always do that, or was this some sort of demonstration just for them?

The Travelers were strangely amenable to having Lightwave join them, not charging them anything. They only insisted on mutual defense and learning. Such an interesting stipulation. Not many prized knowledge at the same level as security. Lashtar was puzzled; this negotiation was unlike any she’d seen before with the Travelers and didn’t match their reputation at all.

And that made all of them more than a little nervous. Especially combined with the secretive smiles and amused glances between the clan members. The Travelers were hiding more than normal according to Lashtar, but she was fairly certain whatever this particular secret was, it wasn’t going to hurt them. Embarrass or surprise them, yes, the Travelers were clearly waiting for something of that nature, but Lashtar didn’t think it would harm them.

Saree shrugged. Besides, they could simply fold elsewhere.

“Approaching the clock,” Katryn said.

“Cloaking holding steady,” Ruhger said from the co-pilot’s seat.

“Docking in five, four, three, two, latch.”

The faintest of shudders ran through the shuttle as they docked with the clock, another vibration indicating the clamps latching.

Ruhger bounded over to her. “Ready for a check?”

“Ready.” She put her helmet up and ran the diagnostics. “Self-check looks good.”

“Everything clean and green on mine. Visual inspection.”

As she slowly turned, Ruhger looked her over, and she did the same for him. “Good to go,” she said.

“Clean and green. Ready?”

She nodded. Ruhger walked to the airlock and Saree followed, her clock maintenance case “Big Beige” following her. They waited patiently for the airlocks to cycle.

Katryn said, “No hazards noted, cloaking holding steady,”

Ruhger replied, “Copy that, entering clock.” Rifle up, he swung the clock’s hatch away, and pushed off into the small space, easily maneuvering in zero-g to clear the area. “All clear. Go ahead, Saree.”

She stepped from the low gravity of the shuttle into zero-g, pushing gently to the clock hatch. Entering her codes and checking the log, she saw no one had been here since her last visit. She huffed a chuckle; the Time Guild probably wouldn’t pay her for this tuning. Saree entered the clock enclosure. Nothing changed since her last visit. She worked through the security there and opened the main clock case. Each individual clock reported alignment well within standards.

Saree just stared. How could that be?

“Saree?” Ruhger asked. He floated in the hatchway, facing away from her, but rifle lowered.

“The clocks don’t need tuning,” she said, her tone revealing her incredulousness.

“How can that be?” He turned to face her.

Saree shook her head. “I don’t know, it doesn’t make sense to me.” She bit her lip. “I’m entering ^timespace^ just in case there’s something wrong with the reporting.
